German for priests and other members of the religious community
In 2014, a total of 2,386 foreign priests were posted to positions in Germany. 16.6% of all catholic pastors working in Germany today have a native language that is not German. The work of a pastor involves a lot of verbal communication; counseling, giving liturgies for special occasions, taking confession, participating in parish counsel meetings, working with parish committees, and chatting with parishioners at parish events. In addition to those situations, there are many more which involve written communication skills, like writing sermons, letters and applications, as well as communicating with church administrators. This is what is expected of priests and other members of the religious community in Germany. It is quite common that parishioners have difficulties understanding the accents of their new pastors. It is therefore beneficial if the pastor can touch the parishioners’ hearts and souls with words they can understand. And of course it is also critical that they preach the gospel in German.
