TREFFPUNKT at the MAEAS Career Day
Do you want to set up a company straight after graduation or would you prefer to take the path of regular employment? Many students are unsure towards the end of their studies and don't know which direction to take.
The Master's programme in American and English Studies at the University of Bamberg has now held a Career Day where students could find inspiration. On the podium were six alumnae of the University of Bamberg who are now firmly in their professional lives.
In addition to a project manager and a university lecturer, a translator and a doctoral student, there were also two representatives of language teaching on the podium: a language teacher and Kristina Schimmeyer, managing director of the language institute TREFFPUNKT.
In front of about forty people, the women told of their professional decisions and stations, their mistakes and helpers along the way. Kristina Schimmeyer talked about how she took over the company as a mother of two small children. This was not always easy, because toddlers require a lot of attention, and at the same time Kristina Schimmeyer was constantly challenged as CEO. However, the TREFFPUNKT CEO also spoke about which skills and knowledge from her studies and professional experience still help her in managing the company today.
Eine wichtige Botschaft lautete: Die Aufgaben einer Geschäftsführerin betreffen weniger das alltägliche und operative Geschäft als vielmehr das Weichenstellen für die Zukunft. Es geht darum, eine Vision für das Unternehmen zu haben und die Entscheidungen heute so zu treffen, dass die Firma zukünftig der Vision immer näherkommt. Daran arbeitet Kristina Schimmeyer jeden Tag.
In einem waren sich die Frauen einig. Der Anfang der Selbstständigkeit ist hart. Wörtlich sagte eine der Frauen: „Man muss zunächst viel Dreck essen, und es dauert lange, bis es dann endlich Kaviarschnittchen gibt.“ Außerdem gaben sie den Studierenden mit auf den Weg, dass sie sich vor einer Bewerbung unbedingt mit dem Unternehmen auseinandersetzen sollten, und ihre Bewerbung an konkrete Ansprechpartner richten sollten.
Ein weiteres Thema des Podiums: Frauen im Beruf. Die Teilnehmerinnen diskutierten auch über die Frage, ob Frauen es heute im Beruf immer noch schwerer haben als Männer. Da hat Kristina die Erfahrung gemacht, dass dies bei ihrer Tätigkeit keine Rolle spielt. Sie sagt: „Es ist mir egal, was andere über mich als Frau denken. Wenn sie mit mir als Frau ein Problem haben, ist das nicht mein Problem.“
